INNOPROM Flagship Session Discusses Challenges and Issues Which Accompany Digitalization of Production

08 July 2019

INNOPROM flagship session was held as part of Digital Manufacturing track on July 8. Top representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and CEOs of major global and Russian manufacturing and technological companies came together to discuss challenges and issues pertaining to digitalization of production. Event participants considered industrial digitalization from three different perspectives: manufacturers of digital technologies, their clients (Russian industrial giants), and the state.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Oleg Bocharov said, "The Ministry of Industry and Trade is embarking upon a major overhaul of the national innovation system. The state must maintain its role as educator. We need to provide support to actual products made by actual manufacturers as opposed to incentivizing huge numbers of developers. The more universal product we create, the smaller the price of servicing and parts and the higher the impulse to accelerate processes that are essential to our progress."

Sergey Kravchenko, President of Boeing Russia & CIS, pointed out that "the future of the digital world depends on global internet. Russia is the world's largest country with the largest airspace, and we are still one of the global leaders in infrastructure launch."

The session featured the results of the Digital Transformation Readiness Index prepared by Strategy Partners specifically for INNOPROM. President of Strategy Partners Group Aleksandr Idrisov stated that "the study sought to assess digital transformation readiness. The Index was developed by an international group of experts." He also underscored the low present level of process automation.Aleksandr Idrisov identified the following problem areas:

"First, de facto the digital transformation does not involve a change in the business model. So far we are seeing the implementation of isolated solutions meant to resolve functionality issues. Second, the level of basic process automation is low. If we look at the list of technologies currently used by companies, digital design claims one of the top spots, but mobile technologies and solutions related to artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are still in very early stages in their development. As for the digital transformation of process management, 48% of companies understand that it is inevitable and will have to be reckoned with. The majority of companies focus on digitalization of their production processes. An important observation on corporate management: most companies do not have someone who would stand one level below the CEO and actually perform process management. Such positions are just being introduced. Many Russian companies point out that they lack the necessary competences in the digital transformation."

Event participants also included:

  • Andrey Komarov, Chairman of the Board, Chelyabinsk Pipe-Rolling Plant;
  • Vadim Shvetsov, Chairman of the Board, SOLLERS»;
  • Andrey Filatov, Director General, SAP CIS;
  • Anton Malkov, Board Member, Galaktika Corporation;
  • Dmitriy Mramorov, Chairman of the Board, SKB Kontur;
  • Alexei Belyakov, Vice-President, Executive Director of Advanced Manufacturing Technology Cluster, Skolkovo Foundation.
